Instructors
- John Gaz is a local pro bike mechanic with over 20 years experience in bike mechanics. John works at REI, is a full-time bike commuter, and volunteers his time with P2P. John has that rare gift of thoroughly understanding information and being able to teach the material. His sense of humor and love of bikes is evident, and we know you'll love experiencing one of his classes.
- Ryan Volsen is a bicycle commuter and social advocate, as well as a mechanic at the P2P shop. Working with several bicycle cooperatives in the Pacific Northwest Ryan is committed to education and empowerment, and loves the greasy mechanics of bicycle maintenance.
- John Speare is a hobbyist wheel builder, co-founder of Pedals2People, and a general bike enthusiast. John has built about two dozen wheels using Sheldon's method and feels like he can probably help other newbies through the process as long as Glen can check our work.
- Glen Copus built his first wheel when he was 14. He is the owner of Elephant Bikes and has a long history of bike racing, professional bike mechanic support, and bike building and manufacturing.

In this orientation you will learn tool and shop etiquette, sign in/out procedures, and information on what Pedals2People does in the community. This is a prerequisite to using the shop and participating in volunteer opportunities.Wheel Building and Repair
Instructor: John SpeareFacilitator: Glen Copus
This is a 3-part series; about 7 hours of class time. Limited to six students per class.
We'll work from Sheldon Brown's method of wheel building to build up a strong set of wheels. Learn to lace, true, dish, and tension a wheel set from the ground up. In the first class you'll build up and finish the front wheel following a step-by-step process with the rest of the class. In the second class, you'll work on your own to build up the rear wheel while Glen and John provide help as needed. In the final class, we'll true up old wheels that have bends and wobbles and make them strong and straight again.
For more information about this class, go here.
Cost: $60/series You must supply your own wheel components for this class prior to the first meeting. If you do not want to keep a wheel set, then Pedals2People can supply the components for you to build up.
P2P is a Velocity dealer, so we can provide a special deal on Velocity rims, spokes, and hubs for students that take this class. In additon, Pedals2People has arranged a 10% discount with Two Wheel Transit for wheel components and tools bought for this class. If you want to take advantage of this offer, please contact us so we can do a batch order with Two-Wheel before each class.
Pedals2People also has used hubs that you can purchase. Don't build up your first wheel on a used rim though.
Hands-On Commuter Basics
